National anthem

(The Unfinished Canadianより)

O Canada, the National anthem of Canada is played in every morning in every school. All the students stop doing no matter what it is and bow the song. That's the first thing I was surprised at since I started visiting around schools.

Why play the anthem? ?

To let the people get unified as one nation, to foster or promote the patriotism towards their nation.

School sites can be varied depending on the need of society.

To me, it would seem to be a promotion of patriotism which might encourage the nationalism, if we did the same style of education in Japan. Actually that is what we did in the past for real during the period of the wars, which we learn on the course to become a teacher as part of our history of education. Due to what we did in the past education, I tended to associate playing the national anthem in school with an enhancement of nationalism.

However, here is not Japan but Canada,

where approximately nearly 40 million people live including immigrants and refugee for 20% of its total as well as the second and third generation of those. Since such a multicultural nation that has various ethnic people and communities on its land, I figure that "impregnating" what is a Canadian, How is a Canadian like, should be required in school in order to get them to understand the importance of inclusiveness and to get them unified altogether as one nation.

What the Canadian society needs is to make the people aware that each of them is one of the Canadians, meaning that to have the people have the sence of being a citizen living in Canada, which is therefore what the school sites are needed to do. The playing the O Canada can be part of this educational approach as the promotion of "impregnating the color of Canadian.

Meantime, these kinds of promotion are provided in various ways such as not only education of geography and history, but also preservation of historical places and natural heritages by some accountable organizations as well as the federal government in order to identify what is the Canadian, who is the Canadian for the people.

Unless those kinds of promotion, the inclusive society is never built up otherwise.
